A replacement butterfly valve costs less than a tank of fuel. The failures it prevents do not. Here they are, ranked by consequence.
1 · Gasket passes under head pressure
The most expensive failure and the cheapest part. A tired face gasket seals fine when the tote is a third full and begins weeping when it is full, which means it fails on the day you filled it with product rather than on the day you tested it with water.
Cost: the product, the clean-up, and possibly a containment report. Prevention: a new gasket every wash cycle. We fit one as standard and do not charge separately for it.
2 · Butterfly knocked open
Quarter-turn valves are fast, which is their virtue and their defect. A pallet jack, a passing fork or a determined pallet corner can open one. The tote then empties completely, usually overnight.
Prevention: a lockout collar or a cap on the outlet. Both cost a few dollars. We recommend caps on anything stored where vehicles move.
3 · Cracked outlet flange
Caused by hanging weight off the outlet — a cast pump, a long rigid pipe run, a hose that somebody drove over while it was connected. The crack is usually radial and invisible until the tote is full.
Prevention: support the pump. We fabricate frame-mounted brackets because this failure is so common.
4 · Seized plug or ball
Product dries in the valve body and the mechanism locks. Usually recoverable with heat and patience, occasionally not. Annoying rather than catastrophic — unless it seizes open.
Prevention: exercise valves monthly on stored units, and rinse the valve body when you empty.
5 · Thread damage on the bottle outlet
Cross-threading an adapter onto an S60x6 outlet chews the buttress thread. The valve will still fit; it will never seal properly again. This is the failure that turns a serviceable bottle into a rebottling job.
Prevention: hand-start every fitting, always. If it needs a wrench in the first two turns, it is cross-threaded.
6 · Wrong gasket material
EPDM in a hydrocarbon service swells, softens and extrudes. It does not fail immediately, which is what makes it dangerous — it fails in week six, with a full tote, on a Friday.
| Service | Gasket | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Water, dilute acid/alkali | EPDM | Buna in ozone |
| Hydrocarbons, solvents | Viton / FKM | EPDM |
| Food contact, heat | Silicone | Buna |
| Fuels and oils | Buna / NBR | EPDM |
