Chapter 05 · Valves, caps & fittings
Most tote
problems are
thread problems.
The container is simple. The interface between the container and your plumbing is where the money and the leaks are. Four thread standards cover almost everything you will meet.
Thread standards
The four you will actually meet
If you remember one thing from this page: measure the outside diameter of the male thread in millimetres. That single number resolves nearly every ordering mistake in this industry.
| Designation | Thread OD | Also called | Where | Mates with |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S60x6 | 60 mm | Coarse buttress, "2 inch IBC thread" | Outlet of most composite IBCs | Garden hose, camlock, ball valve adapters |
| S70x6 | 70 mm | Wide buttress | Some European bottles | Dedicated S70 adapters only |
| DN150 / 6" | 150 mm | Fill port, screw cap | Top of the bottle | Vented or solid lids, screen inserts |
| DN225 / 9" | 225 mm | Wide fill port | Wide-mouth and many food bottles | 9 inch lids, basket strainers |
Valves
What to put on the outlet
The standard replacement is a 2 inch butterfly. Everything else is a response to a specific product behaviour.
| Valve | Best for | Flow | Watch out |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2" butterfly | Water, thin chemicals, most jobs | Good | Quarter-turn — easy to knock open accidentally |
| 2" ball, full port | Viscous product, syrups, oils | Best at 2 inch | Heavier and longer; check your clearance |
| 3" butterfly | Fast discharge, slurries | Excellent | Needs a 3 inch bottle outlet, not an adapter |
| Plug valve | Slurries and settling solids | Moderate | Needs occasional exercise to stay free |
| Lockout collar | Shared yards, tamper risk | — | Add a tamper seal for traceability |
Caps, lids & vents
What goes on top
| Item | Fits | Use | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6" solid screw lid | DN150 | Sealed storage and transport | Standard on most units |
| 6" vented lid | DN150 | Gravity discharge without glugging | Essential if you dispense by gravity |
| 6" screen insert | DN150 | Rain harvesting, feed | Stops insects and debris |
| 9" lid | DN225 | Wide-mouth bottles | Often food stock; check before ordering |
| Gasketed vent plug | DN150 | Outdoor storage, thermal breathing | Prevents bottle deformation in heat |
| Tamper seal & wire | Any | Traceability | Cheap insurance on shared sites |
The one adapter everybody needs
S60x6 to garden hose
If you have bought a tote for water, fertilizer, livestock or rainwater, this is the part you are about to look for.
It threads onto the 2 inch outlet and converts to a standard 3/4 inch GHT male or female. From there the entire world of hoses, splitters, timers and drip fittings is available to you. Buy the brass or reinforced poly version — the thin injection-moulded ones crack at the hex within a season.
The second most-needed part is an S60x6 to 2 inch camlock, for anyone moving product with a pump. Aluminium for durability, polypropylene where chemical compatibility matters.
Gaskets & seals
The cheapest part, the most leaks
- EPDM
- The default. Excellent for water, dilute acids and alkalis, poor with oils and hydrocarbons.
- Viton / FKM
- For hydrocarbons, solvents and aggressive chemistry. Several times the price and worth it when needed.
- Silicone
- Food contact and high temperature. Not for oils.
- Buna / NBR
- Oils and fuels. Degrades with ozone and sunlight.
- Replacement interval
- Every wash cycle on our line. Gaskets cost cents; a leak costs a day.
